Department of Cardiology, AIIMS Guwahati

Introduction

The Department of Cardiology is a medical specialty that focuses on the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases and disorders of the heart and circulatory system. The department is staffed by highly trained cardiologist, nurses, and other healthcare professionals who work together to provide patients with the best possible care.

Cardiology encompasses a wide range of conditions, from common issues such as hypertension and arrhythmias to more complex problems such as heart failure and congenital heart defects. The department provides a comprehensive range of services, including diagnostic testing, medical management, interventional procedures, and rehabilitation programs.

Patients who are referred to the Cardiology Department may undergo a variety of tests, including electrocardiograms (ECGs), echocardiograms, stress tests, and cardiac catheterizations. Treatment options may include medication, lifestyle changes, cardiac rehabilitation, or surgical procedures such as angioplasty or bypass surgery.

The Department of Cardiology is committed to providing personalized, compassionate care to every patient, with the goal of improving their heart health and quality of life.

The vision of the Cardiology Department is to be a leading provider of high-quality, patient-centered care for individuals with heart and circulatory system diseases. The department aims to achieve this by staying up-to-date with the latest advances in research and technology, and by providing a wide range of comprehensive services that meet the needs of patients at every stage of their heart health journey.

The mission of the Cardiology Department is to provide the best possible care for patients with heart and circulatory system diseases. The department is dedicated to improving the health and well-being of its patients by providing state-of-the-art diagnostic testing, medical management, and interventional procedures. The department also strives to promote heart health through education and preventive care.

Workshop :

  • Organising Annual quiz competition for MBBS students on the occasion of World Heart Day every year since 2022.
  • Organizing Secretary for Cardiovascular Research Convergence 2024 (1st Joint Venture Conference) in collaboration with the Cardiology Department, AIIMS New Delhi and NIPER Guwahati at NIPER Guwahati.

Infrastructure :

OPD (Out Patient Department)

OPD is located in 2nd floor OPD building, has 4 consultation rooms for Faculty and residents.

NIC (Non Invasive Cardiology) lab 1: Near OPD houses Tread mill testing and Head Up Tilt Table system with emergency Defibrillator system.

NIC (Non Invasive Cardiology) lab 2: Near CTVS OPD houses Echocardiography, ABPM and Holter systems along with 12 Channel ECG service for outpatients.

DEMO/SEMINAR ROOM :

 There is one seminar room in the OPD, with a seating capacity of 50 people, and an audio-visual facility.

STORE :

There is one store room for storing of drugs and consumables for OPD use.

Interventional Cardiology Complex:

Located on the 2nd floor of the IPD building, consists of a dedicated Cardiac Catheterisation Laboratory (Cardiac Cathlab) along with Doctor and Reporting rooms and a Store room. and a 3-bedded Cath recovery unit with facilities for intensive monitoring.

IPD (Indoor Patient Department)

A dedicated five-bedded post–catheterization ward has been established within the existing Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (CICU) and is planned to evolve into a fully functional CICU in the near future. Additionally, the Cardiology IPD ward, located on the 5th floor of the IPD building, is scheduled to become operational shortly.

The department is also contributing in Undergraduate STS projects under I.C.M.R and with collaboration with NIPER Guwahati and IIT Guwahati.

Clinical Services :

OUTPATIENT SERVICES:

Monday:-  Cathlab

Tuesday:- OPD (9 am to 4 pm).

Registration till 2 pm

Wednesday:- Cathlab

Thursday:- OPD (9 am to 1 pm) Forenoon

                     Pediatric Echocardiography (2 pm to 4 pm) Afternoon

Friday:-  Adult Echocardiography

Saturday:-  Speciality investigations on appointment (HUTT, Stress Echocardiography, Transesophageal Echocardiography ).

NIC (Non-Invasive Cardiology):

  • Electrocardiography (ECG)
  • Echocardiography (ECHO), 2D and 3D, including Stress Echocardiography, LV strain imaging
  • Ambulatory blood pressure monitoring
  • 24/48 hr Holter monitoring
  • Treadmill Testing
  • Tilt Table Testing

IC (Interventional Cardiology):

  • Diagnostic Angiography services
  • Percutaneous Angioplasty services with or without Stenting (PTCA+/-S)
  • Intracardiac Device Implantation (Pacemakers, ICDs, etc.)

TELE-CONSULTATION: The department provides teleconsultation services as per appointment.

OUTREACH ACTIVITY: The department is providing once-a-week outreach services in designated areas requiring Cardiology specialty services.

PATIENT AWARENESS ACTIVITY: The department conducts patient awareness activities in the community and among students, as well as in the hospital during “World Heart Day “ and  “ World Hypertension Day”.

Upcoming services:

  • CCU (Coronary care unit)
  • Advanced Heart failure management with Mechanical circulatory support (eg. Intra aortic balloon pump)
  • EPS +/- RFA(Electrophysiology studies with or without radiofrequency ablation)
  • Foetal Echocardiography
  • Speciality Clinics

Teaching & Training :

  • The department of Cardiology has proposed starting of D.M. (Cardiology) course programme.
  • The department is involved in teaching M.D. (Medicine) students.
  • The department is involved in M.B;B.S. teaching.
  • The department also takes classes for Defence Services doctors, and Medical Officers. (organized by Trauma and Emergency department)
  • The department is involved in orientation classes for Nursing Officers, and Paramedical workers.
  • CPR and ACLS classes are conducted for Resident Doctors and  Nursing Officers of the Department.
  • The Department is engaged with teaching of M Pharma students and Co Guiding PhD students based on MoU with NIPER Guwahati.
